Grotto Geyser, Yellowstone National Park

Day One

For some reason, I decided to challenge myself and shoot every photo for this trip in JPG instead of RAW. This is what happens when you don’t use your camera regularly, ‘minor’ settings get forgotten sometimes. We booked a room for a couple of nights at the Old Faithful Lodge and drove up from Denver. This first day was all driving. We stopped for the Park signs at Grand Teton and the southern Yellowstone entrance.

Day Two

We got up early on the second day and started walking. In the morning, we hiked all around the Upper Geyser, including Geyser Hill and the Black Sand Basin. Highlights include the Emerald Pool, Punch Bowl Spring, Grotto Geyser, and Castle Geyser Erupting. In the afternoon, we hiked along the Firehole River through Biscuit Basin, and up to Mystic Falls. Highlights include Sapphire Pool, Mystic Falls, and Morning Glory Pool. We covered over 10 miles on the day and enjoyed every minute of it.

Day Three

On the third day, we drove over to the Midway Geyser Basin. We spent most of the day hiking around the Grand Prismatic, Firehole River, and up to the Fairy Falls. After visiting Fairy Falls, we visited the Firehole Falls prior to hiking around the Fountain Paint Pots.

Day Four

The last day of our Old Faithful adventure was more relaxing with a small driving tour. Stops included West Thumb Geyser Basin and Gull Point. We also visited the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with both Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls on our way out of the park.
